Earthquakes and tidal instability. I would almost be inclined to believe the root cause to be tectonic activity at sea, save for the fact that there have been no major tidal waves. Nor should the current rumblings be enough to effect what we see of the ocean.

Perhaps there's a different cause for each?

[The viewpoint's more than a little shaky, but in between the rather jarring jumps it's clear that Lexaeus is fighting... something. And winning, by the looks of it.]

I'd assume this isn't a normal occurrence, even by the standards of this world?

[Lexaeus is sitting on the ground amongst some of the trees on the mountain. Where is unclear, save for that it's somewhere below the snow line. For a moment, there's simply silence as he turns a smallish rock over and over in his hands.]
